A busy week in Innisfil
The inaugural meeting of the 2006-2010 council last Wednesday evening was a true delight. As I have never attended an inaugural meeting before, I was in awe of the pomp and circumstance that took place. It was fantastic that so many residents turned up for the swearing in of the new council, and it was great to see many mayors from other municipalities show their support of the town. From the staff being piped in, to the town crier, to the angelic voices of the Sandy Covettes, the event was exceptional. The town staff should be commended for a well planned and well executed ceremony. *** What a pleasure it was last Friday to attend the unveiling of the latest project undertaken by the Innisfil Historical Society, their book Farms of Innisfil: Chores, Challenges and Changes. The book is not only a great historical reference to the farming industry of the town, but a wonderful collection of stories and photos of farming past and present. The turnout for the book unveiling was great - more chairs had to be brought out to accommodate the residents who turned out not only to pick up their copy of the book, but to have members of the Society sign the book as well. The Innisfil Historical Society has worked tirelessly over the past two years getting stories and photos together for a collection of Innisfil nostalgia. The Society plays a great role in preserving the history of our town and carrying it out perfectly. I know many residents are looking forward to the unveiling of their next project: The Knock School House restoration. *** The Alcona Santa Claus Parade held on Sunday was a great success. A swarm of residents turned out to see not only the man in red himself, but their friends and neighbours who were participants in the event. With 42 floats and bands, the Alcona Santa Claus Parade topped off what was already a beautiful Sunday afternoon. *** With 13 days left until Christmas, the next event happening in the town is the Light Up at the Lefroy Fire Station. The event will start around 5pm. Of course, business does go on, and there will be council meetings tonight and next Wednesday. Then council will adjourn until the new year. |
