Adjala-Tos woman has West Nile
S i m c o e Muskoka's first probable case of the virus
Preliminary tests show an Adjala-Tosorontio woman bordering New Tecumseth is Simcoe Muskoka's first probable human case of West Nile virus in three years.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit received test results

indicating the West Nile virus infection late Thursday. The woman has not required hospitalization and is recovering.

"We knew from our monitoring program that the virus was present in the bird population in Simcoe and Muskoka, and that a human case was possible," said Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner."We continue to remind the public to use personal protection when they are outdoors to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes."

The health unit is stepping up its surveillance program in the vicinity, including adult mosquito trapping and testing. The health unit also encourages the public to continue reporting dead birds.

This is the province's second probable human case of West Nile virus this year. The other occurred earlier in the week in northwesternOntario. The virus has been confirmed in 10 birds in Simcoe and Muskoka.
