CHURCHILL NEWS
by Linda Gerow

Welcome to Labour Day, the holiday that is now so much a part of our culture that Canadians rarely pause to consider its true purpose and meaning. Today, Labour Day is often more associated with fairs and festivals, and a last summer weekend at the cottage, than with what it was meant to be - a heartfelt celebration of workers and their families. Labour Day began in Canada on April 15, 1872, a mere five years after Confederation. On that historic day the Toronto Trades Assembly, the original central labour body in Canada, organized the country's first significant 'workers demonstration.' (source: www.nupge- .ca/news).

Now, Labour Day is associated with the end of summer, returning to school and the end of warm weather. Without its humble beginnings, we wouldn't have a Labour Day to celebrate.

on Saturday, Nov. 4th from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., upstairs in the banquet hall. The reason for this early notice is so the vendors who lease table space can get their request in early by calling Carolyn at 705-458-0748. Cost is $25 per table and space is limited. This hall has elevator access to the top floor; there will be the usual baked goods, preserves, sewing/knitting, penny draw, hand crafts and raffles. Don't delay, call today.

Get better wishes are extended to Ena Meher and Eleanor Latter. Two of our favourite ladies are in our thoughts and prayers.

Smile: Juggler, driving to his next performance, was stopped by the police. "What are those knives doing in your car?" asked the officer. "I juggle them in my act." "Oh yeah?" says the cop. "Let's see you do it." So the juggler starts tossing and juggling the knives. A guy driving by sees this and says, "Wow, am I glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they're making you do now!"
