Give the rec facility a great name Dear editor: As members of the Innisfil Community Events Corp. we have over the past 10 years held events (Summerfest, Fallfest, Winterfest etc.) to raise money for the much needed new Rec centre as well as other many donations to the community. The good residents of Innisfil and surrounding areas have come out to support our events and by doing so we are pleased that we have committed $250,000 to the new rec centre. We do not expect anything being named after our committee. We are doing this because it is the right thing to do! We are just one of the many groups of volunteers raising money for the Rec centre and other projects in the community. We think that all groups donating their time and efforts including the taxpayers should have a say in the naming of the Rec Centre. We need to address some comments printed in the Aug 30th edition of this paper. Mr Cortellucci is donating $2,000,000 to the Centre (5% of the total cost). Good for him. We commend him on his donation but as stated the highest donation gets to name the MURF. Who do you think is paying the rest of the cost? That's right....taxpayers of Innisfil, the same taxpayers that will have to on a yearly basis through their taxes continue to pay the upkeep and maintenance of this new facility and not just a one time donation. Does this not mean the residents get to name it? We should take a vote residents. We think that Innisfil Rec Centre would be a good name, or going back a few letters, we take Brenda Wauchope's idea and name it after an historic resident! It also states in Aug. 30th paper that Council passed that idea, the same people that pay taxes with the rest of us! How about letting the residents know this before it was too late. We also commend the fundraising committee on their hard work and dedication in raising money as well as awareness of this future great facility! Now we have a "Leadership Giving Team". What is this for? Just what we need, another committee/- team making recommendations and decisions. This letter is by no means intended to beat up or trash anyone. Let's just do the right thing and give this great facility a proper name that enhances and puts this great Town on the map! Steve Bird, Bryan Dorie Steve & Lynne Vendraminetto, John Orr |
