Third rabid bat confirmed in Muskoka

A bat that tested positive for rabies in Muskoka Lakes Township serves as a reminder for people to be cautious around wildlife. One individual is being treated for a bite from the bat, which occurred Monday, August 28.

The bat was safely captured and submitted to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for rabies testing. Positive results were received at the health unit on August 29.

"While a bat may show unusual behaviour, such as flying during the day, or crawling on the ground, only testing can determine whether a bat is carrying rabies," said Marina Whelan, the health unit's manager of health hazards.

"Fortunately, this event was properly handled by the individuals involved," Whelan said. "The individual immediately contacted a physician; the incident was reported quickly to the health unit; and the bat was captured so it could be tested."

This is the third bat confirmed with rabies in Simcoe Muskoka this year. On average, the health unit investigates three to six cases of

rabid bats a year. Across Ontario last year, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency identified rabies in 61 bats.

Anyone bitten by a bat or any animal should take the following precautions.

Immediately wash the wound well with soap and water Consult a physician

Notify the local health unit

Parents should remind children to avoid contact with all wild and stray animals.

Bats that are found inside a home, or that have been in direct contact with a person or animals, can be tested for rabies by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency office in Barrie.

Anyone with questions can call Your Health Connection, at 721-7520, or 1-877-721-7520, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Information on rabies is also available on the health unit's website at www.simcoemuskokahealth. org.
