THORNTON NEWS There will be two 'All Candidates Meet & Greets' held in the area over the next two days. Tonight, October 25 there will be a meeting held at the Thornton Library/Fire Hall from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and then tomorrow evening at the same time there will be a meet and greet at the Essa Administration Centre on County Road 21. Come out and meet the candidates that are running in our ward and make an informed decision about who you'll vote for. The municipal election will be held Monday, November 13 with the polling stations open from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. There will be a polling station at the Thornton Library/Fire Hall on Robert Street and at the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Area at 8195 8th Line Utopia. An advance poll will be held at the Essa Administration Centre on Saturday, November 4th from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for those who can't make it on the Election Day. There is only one low cost rabies clinic left in the area. It will be held at the Essa Roads Garage at the corner of County Roads 21 & 56 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 28. The cost is $15 cash per animal. Every dog or cat must be leashed or caged and over 3 months of age. For more information about rabies or the clinics visit www.simcoehealth.org . The next meeting of the Essa Historical Society is at the Thornton Library on Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at 1:30 p.m. The topic will be War Memories and the guest speaker will be Susan Stein. All are invited to attend. For more information call 458-9971. Don't forget to change your clocks back one hour before bed on Saturday evening. While you're at it check the batteries in your smoke detectors to make sure they're all operating. It would be a shame for someone to lose their life in a fire over the cost of a new battery. Also, winter parking regulations will be in effect from November 1 until May 1, 2006. If you park on the street between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. you can get a ticket. You can be ticketed even if there is no snow. Library Month in Canada and at our local library is quickly coming to an end. Make sure that you have returned your 'Book Links' by October 30th for the draw and so that the library staff can determine how far we've read this month. Every book link is counted as 1 km. The story writing contest called 'Telling Our Stories' continues until the end of November. For more information or to enter your story about how your community library has affected your life go to www. t v o . o r g / t e l l i n g ourstories. Your story could be eligible for part of the $5000 in cash prizes. Registration begins on October 30 for the November sessions of Story Time at the library. The sessions start on either November 13 or 14 and continue for the next three weeks. The cost is $2 per child for the session. The next Ontario Early Years Make'n Take Storytime is scheduled for October 31. There is no charge for this program but pre-registration is required. For information call the library staff at 458-2549. Canada Career Week is celebrated at the library from October 29 until November 4. They will feature a display of materials promoting various career options and feature handouts on a variety of career related topics. Stop by and see their collection featuring CD-ROMS about Workplace Safety, WHMIS, Employer Liabilities and introductory training for Educational Assistants. Don't forget to watch out for all the ghosts, goblins and other things that go bump in the night on Tuesday evening. Be careful if you are driving after dark when the kids are out trick or treating. If you have any news, meetings, weddings, anniversaries or special occasions, I'd be happy to write about them. You can email me at thornton news@rogers.com or by telephone at 458-0869, or drop it off at 25 Robert Street. Bye for now...... |
