CHURCHILL NEWS On Sunday at St. Peter's, one of our war veterans, Jack Brynaert, gave the children's talk for Remembrance Day. Jack related his war time experience of World War II, leaving for battle at the age of seventeen and being in Europe for five and a half years. He saw much while he was there, including the deaths of many of his friends. Being away from his family was especially hard on Jack . His younger sister had been only 5 when he left and when he returned, she was already becoming a young lady. Seeing Jack talking with the young children reminded me of the passage of time and just how little has changed. Here we are, still embroiled in war all around the world and Jack had fought in what was supposed to be the 'war to end all wars'. This was not to be. At the Remembrance service at the new cenotaph at the Legion in Belle Ewart later that morning this sentiment was reflected in the words inscribed. The cenotaph is dedicated to not just the brave men and women who fought and gave their lives in the first and second world wars, but to those to are still serving in the many forces fighting today. Thank you, Jack, and thank you to all those other veterans who fought to make us free. May we always remember their bravery and dedication. At the end of the Service, the pall-bearers are carrying the casket out when they accidentally bump into a wall, jarring the casket. They hear a faint moan. They open the casket and find that the woman is actually still alive. She lives for ten more years and then dies. A ceremony is again held at the same church and at the end of the ceremony, the pall bearers are again carrying out the casket. As they are walking, the husband cries out, "AND WATCH OUT FOR THAT WALL! If you have any news/items for this column, please contact me at 705- 436-9769 or email me at lagerow@rogers.com. |
