An exciting election night
by Michelle Minnoch

The new council has been elected and it looks like Vote By Mail was a success.

Although I was not behind the scenes to witness the process, and any possible obstacles that scrutineers may have come across, after a 26% turnout last time around, residents have shown that Vote By Mail is the preferred option, with a 45% return this time around.

The candidates, their teams and many residents turned went to the Stroud Arena on Monday evening to watch the numbers. About every half an hour to an hour, new numbers came across the screen, and those present cheered when they saw favourable figures.

I have never covered a municipal election, and the only election experience I have is with the recent federal election.

What a rush it was!

Although sometimes tiring, as the numbers would change periodically, when they did, you could feel the excitement, and disappointment, in the room. While we were anxiously watching the numbers for our Town, many wanted to know what was happening to our neighbours to the north and south, Barrie and Bradford. (Bradford Mayor Frank Jonkman was defeated by Doug White; Barrie Mayor Rob Hamilton was defeated by Dave Aspden).

A great campaign was run by all, and a great race was brought to the community. With 26 people vying for 9 positions, democracy was at its finest in our town.

Deputy Mayor Barb Baguley and Councilor Roy Bridge will not be returning this time around. It has been a pleasure working with both of you and all the best in your future endevours.

Congratulations to incumbents Brian Jackson, Gord Wauchope, Paul Wardlaw, Bill Van Berkel, Bill Pring, and Lynn Dollin; welcome to newcomers Peter Kmet and Rod Boynton and Dan Davidson.

The next four years are crucial for the Town of Innisfil; servicing at the 400, talks with Barrie regrading annexation lands, infrastructure and the opening of the new Rec Centre and Administration Building.

Welcome aboard council. Let's hope it's not a bumpy ride!
