Polishing your denture for the holidays

Have you ever looked at your denture and wonder what's the best way to get rid of the stains that have developed over the years? You may have tried various cleaning pastes, soaked them in solutions, or even use good ol' elbow grease to try and scrub those dentures clean. But nothing has truly given you the results you have been looking for? I am often asked what I recommend to get dentures looking their best.
A few weeks ago, a lady asked why her dentures would stain every time she had coffee. She would find herself brushing her dentures several times a day to prevent these unsightly stains. As staining usually occurs slowly over time, I was also curious to find out why this was the case. We decided that I would do a professional cleaning and polishing to see whether that would do the trick. We proceeded to do "the works" to make sure that there would be nothing for stains to cling to. We did an ultrasonic cleaning in various professional
strength cleaners, topped with several polishing and buffing procedures. She inserted the denture and was amazed at how shiny, clean and smooth her dentures felt. In fact, she told me that they had never felt this polished, even when they were new! She came by the following week and told us how impressed she was. She was finally able to drink coffee with peace of mind, knowing that she could smile afterwards without having to give her dentures a quick brush immediately afterwards. It turns out the problem was that the dentures were full of tiny little scratches that were causing the coffee and other
stain causing foods to cling to the dentures. These types of scratches develop over time from the foods you eat, from just general handling or mostly by brushing with toothpaste rather than with denture paste or antibacterial hand soap. Using toothpaste can cause scratches to form much faster than they would otherwise develop. These micro-scratches not only harbour stains, but also are the prefect opportunity for plaque and bacteria to develop and breed. This bacteria not only causes bad breath but can also be harmful to your health.
As with natural teeth, your denture will stain over
