Delivering Results – Federal Accountability Act becomes law
by York-Simcoe MP, Hon. Peter Van Loan

Canada’s new Government has delivered on a campaign commitment to clean up government. After the unelected Liberal-dominated Senate twice tried to delay and water it down, the Federal Accountability Act has finally become law.

The Federal Accountability Act is a very important piece of legislation and is the cornerstone of accountability for our government and for all Canadians. It is the toughest anti-corruption law ever presented in Canadian history.

Canada's New Government is committed to delivering on our campaign promise to clean up the way business is done in Ottawa. The Federal Accountability Act does just that by:

- Reducing the opportunity to exert influence with money by banning corporate, union, and large personal political donations;

- Giving Canadians confidence that lobbying is done ethically with a five-year lobbying ban on former ministers, their aides, and senior public servants;

- Ensuring people who see problems in government know they can speak up by providing real protection for whistleblowers; and

- Ensuring Canadians know how their money is spent by enhancing the power for the Auditor General to follow the money.

Our government has worked hard in this minority situation to get things done for Canadians. We believe the final package is a strong one – one we can be proud of as legislators and one Canadians can be pleased with as citizens.

I am confident that this new law will help change the culture in Ottawa from a culture of corruption and entitlement to a culture of accountability.

Every day Canada’s new Government is rebuilding the public's trust in their institutions and we are restoring Canadians' faith in their elected officials.

People who work hard, pay their taxes, and play by the rules want accountability from their government. This bill is about putting the legacy of political scandal behind us and restoring Canadians’ trust in government.
