Delivering results for York-Simcoe On January 23rd, 2006, York-Simcoe and Canada voted for change. Over the past year, Canada’s New Government has delivered on its commitment to change things for the better for families and taxpayers by: - Passing the Federal Accountability Act - the toughest anti-corruption law in Canadian history; - Delivering more tax relief in our first budget than the last four Liberal budgets combined; - Lowering the GST from 7% to 6%, and delivered over $20 billion in tax relief for individuals; - Creating the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit for organized sports registration fees; - Tackling crime by hiring more police, introducing tougher sentences for violent repeat criminals, cracking down on gun and drug crime and tightening border security; - Offering direct child care support to Canadian parents with the Universal Child Care Benefit -- $1,200 per year for every child under six; - Raising the pension income tax credit from $1000 to $2000; - Allowing pension income splitting, lowering taxes for pensioners. Increasing the age tax credit to help low and moderate income seniors. - Replacing Liberal environmental talk with real action: introducing a Chemicals Management Plan to regulate potentially harmful substances, and Canada’s first Clean Air Act to tackle both greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution; - Introducing the textbook tax credit of up to $500 for students and their parents and eliminating federal income tax on all income from scholarships, bursaries or fellowships; - Strengthening Canada’s place in the world by taking leadership roles within NATO, the UN and the G-8. That’s a solid record of accomplishment for a government that isn’t yet a year old. And Canada’s New Government will continue to get things done for families and taxpayers in 2007! |
