New engineering degree options at Georgian

Georgian College is offering great opportunities for students interested in engineering.

Students can take a common first year of University of Windsor Engineering degree programs at the Barrie Campus. The two institutions began offering Windsor’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering (Automotive option) degree at the Barrie Campus of Georgian College this September. This expanded agreement allows students in the local region access to the common study year for all engineering programs, with students attending Windsor in their subsequent years. Those interested in or Materials engineering may also now take their first two years of studies at Georgian, before moving to Windsor for further studies.

“This option offers students a great deal of flexibility in planning their future,” says Bob Emptage, Georgian Dean of Engineering. “It is especially beneficial for students from the local area because they can stay at home for one or possibly two years before finishing their program in Windsor. It cuts down tremendously on expenses for many students.”

This arrangement also helps students fully develop their interests and options, says Emptage, as they don’t have to specialize right away. Engineering is full of lucrative employment opportunities and Georgian has some of the best labs for degree opportunities in the province, Emptage adds.

“We have tremendous industry support. They have really supported our programs, our labs and our students through co-op opportunities.”
