Innisfil Rec Centre construction right on schedule
      Gary Stanhope, Project Manager MPHM, provided council with an update with the status of the Innisfil Recreation Complex. "If you drive by, you can see the structure going up," he said. While there have been some weather concerns, Stanhope said they are tracking on schedule, only losing about two weeks due to the conditions.

      Colonel Stewart Moore, Base Commander for Canadian Forces Base Borden proudly presented United Way of Greater Simcoe County with a gift of $49,755.20 raised through a number of special events and employee gifts. This year's gift represents a 16% increase from the last campaign and is the largest employee campaign in our region.

Admin building tracking behind
      Council also received an update on the progress of the New Administration Building (NAB) Wednesday night, and were informed it is tracking behind schedule. "We are behind with the site building and the permit process," said David Main, Project Manager, MPHM. He said the contractor, Aecon, has shuffled some of the winter projects to the spring.

Local quilt guilds help to fight breast cancer
      The Simcoe County Quilt Guild (SCQG) and the Kempenfelt Quilt Guild (KQG) are sending quilts to Stratford for the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Support Project. "Last year they passed the $1 million mark," said SCQG President Brenda Wauchope, a member of both quilt guilds.

      The Simcoe County Museum is pleased to offer Winter Day Camp on Feb. 16th. On camp day, we become Science Maniacs! Play DNA Ladders and the Molecule game, make sparks with a lightning monster and experience the power of kinetic energy. Remembering some Cookstown residents
      The community is extending their sincere condolences and sympathy to the Ogden and Walton families on the death of Marion Ogden, cherished by all. Marion died of cancer at her home in Welland, ON. on January 21st. She leaves behind her beloved husband Bram and will be missed by her loving children, grand and great - grandchildren.

      The Thornton Lions Club presented a cheque to Simcoe Muskoka Cancer Care Centre in the amount of $1,000; the first in a pledge of $5,000 by the Thornton Lions Club. This money has been raised by holding fund raising community spaghetti suppers and pancake breakfasts. The next one is a Good Friday Pancake Breakfast on April 6 from 7:30 until 11:00 am.

County takes another look at incineration
      Simcoe County is taking another look at using incineration to dispose of its waste. With discussion over the the county's decision on whether to move ahead on developing a proposed landfill site near Elmvale dominating discussion at last week's county council meeting, county councillors decided to hold a workshop on the county's waste management program in the near future.

      The Essa Historical Society held its January meeting at the Thornton Library on January 25. President Brian Baker opened the meting with the prayer. Brenda Pusch spoke first on the Gibson Centre for Community Arts and Culture. This gave Brian an idea for the next mystery tour in June.

Proposed Environmental Committee rejected
      Councilor Dan Davidson brought a motion forth to council Wednesday night, regarding the implementation of an environmental committee, but the motion was defeated. "I would not be able to support this," said Councilor Lynn Dollin of the motion, who was recently appointed to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
