County takes another look at incineration

by Richard Blanchard

Simcoe County is taking another look at using incineration to dispose of its waste.

With discussion over the the county's decision on whether to move ahead on developing a proposed landfill site near Elmvale dominating discussion at last week's county council meeting, county councillors decided to hold a workshop on the county's waste management program in the near future.

County councillors also agreed to tour various waste facilities including the incinerator in Peel Region.

New Tecumseth deputy mayor Rick Milne told county councillors that another look at incineration had to be considered.

"I am opposed to setting up a landfill at Site #41. I was opposed to the proposed landfill in Adjala-Tosorontio. I understand that both York and Durham regions are looking at incineration and may have trouble getting sufficient waste to operate their facilities. We may be able to help," he said.

County councillors agreed to the tour.
