News from the GICC: March is Fraud Prevention Month

March is Fraud Prevention Month with the theme Fraud: Recognize it. Report it. Stop it. Business, individuals and government all share a responsibility to stop the explosion of identify theft, a crime that claims thousands of victims each year and costs the economy billions of dollars.

Throughout Fraud Prevention Month, a number of activities are being hosted across the country such as anti-fraud events hosted by Better Business Bureaux and the Second Annual Fraud Prevention Community Shred, a one-day shredding event to be held in 20 cities across Canada on March 21st.

The Competition Bureau is currently developing an awareness campaign aimed at informing SMEs and not-for-profit organizations about deceptive telemarketing with a goal of having SMEs better informed to detect scams. The Competition Bureau is looking for assistance in developing a public awareness campaign aimed at businesses.
