Small rink could be open by early January
      The small rink at the Innisfil Recreation Centre could be completed by early January, said the site's supervisor last week. With the large rink already open to the public, construction crews are preparing to pour concrete for the main walkway of the complex, and installing boards in the small ice rink at the recreation centre, said supervisor Mel Milanovic.

      Several bike paths could be built along arterial and collector roads, including the 25th Sideroad, according to a town committee report.

GO service set to return
      GO train service will be returning to Barrie Monday morning, and there are a few things Innisfil residents need to remember, says one official. The service will run passengers between Barrie and Toronto's Union Station four times each morning and evening, and includes stops in Bradford, East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Aurora, King City and Maple among others.

Bill may be puffing smoke
      Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti may not get his private member's bill passed through the legislature, but he has intrigued colleagues, on both sides of the house. The Liberal MPP announced last week that he was bringing forth legislation to protect children under the age of 16 from second-hand smoke in automobiles.

      The Volunteer Firemen's Santa Tour is on Saturday December 15 starting at about 10:30 a.m. Listen for the sirens coming down a street near you. Non-perishable food donations will be collected for the food bank by our volunteer firefighters as they escort Santa around our village.

      Essa council has remained committed to building its new library building at the township arena . The decision was made despite mayor Dave Guergis' argument that the library would be better situated on Mill Street, on a property across from Triangle Park.

      Sun Life Financial, located in Barrie, has donated $10,000 as the sponsor of the third annual Red Door Gala for Gilda's Club. The fundraising event is set to take place at the Gryphon Theatre at Georgian College on Saturday February 16.

Monkman on duty during downtown Barrie fire
      It was gratifying to know, that Rick Monkman, the son of the late Don and Ann Monkman and grandson of the late Lou Monkman of Cookstown, was on duty as the deputy chief of the Barrie Fire Department. Monkman, who has been with the department for 27 years, helped with the evacuation and controlling the fire.

NVCA budget set to jump
      The Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority Board of Directors is proposing to its member municipalities a draft 2008 budget with a 4.5 per cent levy increase over this year. Population growth and water quality concerns are noted as placing additional funding pressures on the NVCA.
