Year in Review - Part 2

Last week, The Scope presented you with the Year in Review for the Town of Innisfil for 2006 from january to June. The following is a list of major events which transpired during the second half of the year.

July

The cenotaph at the Belle Ewart Legion is desecrated during the afternoon. People start donating as soon as the news breaks.

The first public consultation is held regarding the Lake Simcoe Act, sphere headed by MPP Garfield Dunlop (Simcoe North)

The Town holds a meeting regarding the OP and OPA1. OPA1 establishes a growth target of 105,000.

Council receives a "strikeout version" of the OP and OPA. Two new future study areas are identified; the north east corner of the 9th Line and 20th Side Road; north east corner of Belle Aire Beach Road and the 20th Side Road.

Lefroy Arena slated for roof replacement before hockey season starts.

Council makes three more changes to the fire burning by-law; open fires in industrial, commercial and institutional areas are by permit and approval only; farms on over five acres in agricultural areas would not require a site inspection of a fire and should be no larger than three metres by three metres; the distance between a fire and any building or structure is now 50 feet.

The Ladies of the Lake hold their Naked Truth Symposiums in four different locations in two days.

IGAP places the majority of growth in "the Barrie area". As Barrie will be running out of lands within the next three to five years, more growth pressure is put on the Town of Innisfil.

The Georgian Steam Show is held in Cookstown.

The groundbreaking ceremony is held for the new Rec Centre.

It is announced the New Administration Building (NAB) will be completed by fall 2007.

The Innisfil Public Library Board purchases 12 acres of land from the Cookstown Agricultural Society at a cost of $625,000.

The Town proceeds with their Official Plan and OPA1 receives its first reading at council.

August

The LSRCA takes the lead for a One Voice Action Plan.

The 41st Annual Georgian Steam Show, a family fun event, was another success.

Another invasive species enters Lake Simcoe - the round goby.

The Ladies of the Lake's Lake Aid Concert is cancelled.

Vote by mail is defeated by council - residents are now facing going to the polls on municipal election day.

The LSRCA presents their One Voice Action Plan at their Board of Directors meeting. The plan involves partner agencies, citizens, community groups, government and scientists.

The Ladies of the Lake hold their Naked Truth Action Planning Session aboard the Serendipity Princess in Barrie.

The Mayor's Crusin' for CNIB raises $1400.

The LSRCA conduct the first weed survey of Cooks Bay in 60 years.

Simcoe County Councilors and staff meet in Wasaga Beach to discuss IGAP.

September

The Ministry of Transport begins their study of the Hwy. 89 corridor and the possibility of a Cookstown by-pass.

Council votes in favour of vote by mail (again).

An open house presents options for a Cookstown by-pass.

Nantyr Shores is vandalized with swastikas and racial slurs.

The official name of the Red Centre - The Innisfil Recreational Complex.

The IGA in Cookstown is revamped and is re-opened as an IGA.

There is another ground breaking event for the Town - the ground breaking of the NAB.

With the election deadline over, there are three candidates for mayor, two for deputy mayor and 21 people running for council seats.

An Innisfil Real Estate lawyer is charged with several criminal offenses, including two counts of Fraud over $5000; one count of Forgery, two counts of Uttering Forged Documents, one count of Making a false document, two counts of Criminal Breach of Trust.

The Nottawasaga Futures Business Awards were handed out and NBX Action Sports of Innisfil was awarded the Customer Service Award. The Award for the Promotion and Advancement of Literacy was received by Simcoe York Printing, publisher of The Scope.

Family Day at Pet Country Estate raises $10,168 for Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.

October

A vote by mail open house is held at the Churchill Community Centre.

The LSRCA salutes Environmental Giants at Georgian Downs in Innisfil.

The Ontario Curling Association Provincial Colts Men's Curling Championship was won by Andrew Thompson, Dave Thompson, Jeff Gilbert and Chris Wimmer. They brought the banner back to Stroud after a 36 year absence.

Many all candidates meetings are held for the upcoming municipal election.

The Seat Sale initiative is introduced by the Rec Centre campaign team - buy a seat for $300 and get your name on the seat for a ten year period.

The Lakeshore Library celebrates its 5th Anniversary. A time capsule is put away and is to be reopened every five years.

The Alcona Business Association installs a new gateway sign into Alcona.

Alana Deschamps wins the Seepe Walters Writing Award contest.

The Clean water Act receives Royal Assent. The McGuinty government pledges $120 million in funding to support the technical work necessary for the development of local source water protection plans, and announced an additional $7 million to assist farmers and rural landowners with implementation.

The LSRCA held a ground breaking ceremony for the Kidd's Creek project in downtown Barrie.

November

The new cenotaph is unveiled at the Belle Ewart Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Three of the four libraries in Innisfil accredited.

The municipal election results are as follows; Brian Jackson (Mayor), Gord Wauchope (Deputy Mayor) Paul Wardlaw (Ward 1), Bill Van Berkel (Ward 2), Bill Pring (Ward 3), Peter Kmet (Ward 4), Dan Davidson (Ward 5), Rod Boynton (Ward 6), Lynn Dollin (Ward 7).

Cookstown's Light Up Night a great success.

The Innisfil Studio Tour has a high turnout.

An Innisfil man is charges under the Federal Migratory Birds Conservation Act after a witness sees two men in a boat on Lake Simcoe, chasing swans.

Nantyr Shores raises $1450 for the United Way during their yearly fundraising week for the U.W.

Author Scott Griffin visits the Lakeshore Library and discusses his memoir My Heart is Africa.

There is a Ward 3 re-count as there is a difference of seven ballots between incumbent Bill Pring and challenger Ken Simpson. Councilor Pring wins the re-count.

York Simcoe MP Peter van Loan is appointed as a Cabinet Minister - Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Sport.

The Stovold's of Innisfil are the recipients of KOA Franchisee of the Year, for North America.

December

St. James Church in Stroud celebrates its 100th Anniversary with a luncheon and a slide show presentation, with pictures of past and present.

The Innisfil Historical Society launches their Farms of Innisfil Book at the Churchill Community Centre to a full house.

The new Council for The Town of Innisfil takes their Oath of Office at a well attended ceremony in Stroud.

The Alcona Santa Claus Parade includes 42 floats and bands.
