The Gallery on Queen; a fine piece of work
by Michelle Minnoch

In June 2006, Ingrid Schienke opened her store in what she calls her dream venue. The Gallery on Queen, located in the Village of Cookstown, sits in a building that is about 150 years old.

"I have always wanted this building - it's perfect for displaying art," says Ingrid. She says when she saw the building up for sale in the winter, a little dream of hers came true.

Prior to relocating to Cookstown, Ingrid worked with designers and architects in the GTA. She was responsible for selecting art work for various projects, and would discuss needs with her clients.

After years of doing corporate sales and being always on the go, opening the Gallery on Queen, displaying pieces for the public to purchase, is what Ingrid says she really enjoys.

Selling over 100 pieces of original paintings, featuring Canadian and International artists, Ingrid says she sells what she likes and what catches her eye.

"I like speaking with the customers," says Ingrid. "I get a sense of what styles and artists they like, and what they are looking for."

Ingrid says not only will she get in pieces from a particular artist as per a customer request, she will also pay a visit to your home, advising the customer of the types of artwork that would suit their style, down to every last detail, including the frame.

The techniques found in the artwork sold at the Gallery include acrylic, oils, a mixture, and some sculptures.

Ingrid says she loves to feature artists and have open houses, and would like to have one, probably in the summertime. "I like hosting shows because it's an opportunity to show people different styles of art. I want people to ask questions."

Framing is done onsite at the Gallery on Queen. With over 1000 different frame styles to choose from, customers can pick from frames manufactured in Italy and Spain, and can pick the frame which best suits their painting.

Studying Art Illustration at Sheridan College, Ingrid says she occasionally finds the time to do some of her own painting.

She says her all time favourite painter is Picasso "because he is part character, part artist and part marketer".

Her favourite contemporary artists include Canadian Pica Birt, Anne Merrec, with her combination of art and music paintings, and Simcoe County's Michael Foers.

Ingrid says picking out a piece of artwork for your home is a very personal decision.

"The art should move you. It should make you feel good when you look at it."

Ingrid says when spending money on a particular piece, it is always good to do a little research beforehand about the artist.

Whether you are entering a new chapter in your life and want to invest in a piece or two, or if you would like to add another piece to your collection, The Gallery on Queen has a vast selection of artwork, in a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere.

The Gallery on Queen is located at 10 Queen Street in Cookstown, (705) 458-0881.
