Local municipalities see growth since 2001

Local municipalities in South Simcoe have seen significant growth since 2001 according to information gathered from the 2006 census.

But the growth was less than the provincial average of 6.6 per cent in three of four municipalities in South Simcoe.

Statistics Canada released the population information on 5,400 Canadian communities Tuesday.

Innisfil saw its population increase by 8.8 per cent to 31,175 in 2006 from 28,666 in 2001. There were a total of 12,822 private dwellings in the township.

New Tecumseth saw its population increased by six percent from to 27,701 in 2006 from 26,141 in 2001. The census said that there were 10,315 private dwellings in the municipality.

Adjala-Tosorontio saw its population increase by 6,1 per cent to 10,695 in 2006 from 10,082 in 2001. There were a total of 3,702 private dwelling units in the township.

Essa saw its population increase by 0.6 per cent to 16,901 in 2006 from 16,808 in 2001. There were a total of 6,212 private dwellings in the township.

Statistics Canada will be releasing a variety of information from the census over the next year.
