Seniors finish off the curling season in Cookstown
by Susan Stein

On Wednesday, March 28, teams of the Cookstown Curling Club's Senior League held their wind-up bonspieland banquet at the Cookstown Curling Club.

Eight teams, with players picked at random, competed in two six-end games. The ice was great and so was the fun all players had, whether winning or losing. For me, curling only for the third time this season (due to my leg injury) it came as a bonus to play against Walter McCabe's team in the first game and then with him in the second game, and admiring his skill in delivering pressure shots and reading the ice. And for Walter this was the first time curling this year.

Each player tabulated his/her score according to wins and losses, how many ends won, adding the total points to dtermine the winners of bottles of wine or a 649 lottery ticket.

After the games a social time was enjoyed until dinner was served. Jean Reynolds catered the delcious ham and scalloped potato supper. A special treat was the relish, which she made after a recipe from Fred Reynolds grandmother.

Then came entertainment provided by members telling jokes and anecdotes, a curling quiz given by Dorothy Cauthers , a poem by Mary Davie about taking pills. Mary Davie and Cecil Denney delighted us with violin duets, playing jigs and waltzes .

The Ross Brothers Trophy was awarded to the team of John Smith - skip, Ralph Schandlen - vice, Carmine Carpino - seond and Pauline Hauston - lead. The presentor was Elaine Gadsden.

The Ken Crawford trophy was won by John Smith - skip, Nick Clemens - vice, Charlie Reid - second and Pauline Houston - lead. Bob Riley was the presentor.

The Jean and Orville Hughes "No Problem " trophy was graciously accepted by the team of Jim Arnold - skip, Doug Jacobs - vice, Sylvia Keys- second and Joan Webb - lead. Jean Hughes presented the trophy, which embodies the Seniors motto: Always remember, winning is secondary in the origin of our senior club. Have fun and good luck!

Have a good summer.
