Julia Munro Resolution to commemorate the War of 1812 unanimously passes the Legislature

York North MPP Julia Munro's resolution to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 passed unanimously in a vote in the House Thursday, April 5th.

Munro said, "The War of 1812 is one of the defining moments in Ontario's history. Establishing an independent commission to co-ordinate Ontario's commemorations will let historical groups and local communities play an important part in planning our celebrations."

The resolution directs the government to establish a commission that includes amongst its members representatives of groups dedicated to the preservation of Canada's military history and heritage as well as representatives of Ontario communities that are the sites of battles or other significant events of the war.

The commission would work with Ontarians, the federal government and US governments to co-ordinate the commemorations.

Rob Leverty of the Ontario Historical Society said: "Our membership across Ontario knows the importance of remembering and honouring our history. We look forward to working with the commission to develop plans for the bicentennial of the war. "

"The Legislature has now voted to establish a commission to commemorate the War of 1812. The government should now take action to set up the commission and start working with citizens and other levels of government to plan a successful bicentennial" said Munro.
