Class celebrates Earth Week while learning a thing or two
by Michelle Minnoch

A grade 6/7 class from St. Francis of Assisi celebrated Earth Week by dedicating each day of the week learning about and following through with better environmental practices.

On Monday, the students recycled, making birdfeeders from pinecones; Tuesday the students were asked to 'Think outside the Bottle', and try to take a tap water challenge; Wednesday's theme was 'reuse' and students brought in used sports equipment and traded for bigger pads, better stick, etc.; on Thursday, the earth crusaders were treated to viewings of 'An Inconvenient Truth' and 'Happy Feet'. On Thursday, the students also pledged 'I will be a kid of the earth and I promise to be an ambassador of change.' (Friday was a P.A. Day)

Teacher Ann Green said the kids are enthusiastic about the week, and hopes to bring greater awareness to the students and the community.

Green noted that St Francis is the closest school in their board to the lake. She is hoping to start up Kids of the Lake project soon.
