Newtones continue to delight
On Friday, April 27, these clouds were lifted by attending the spring concert, presented by The Newtones. From the beginning, with the Choral group singing Another Show, Song of the Sea and Bye Bye Love, number after number, members excelled in voice, in music, in transmitting the fun they have in performing to the audience. In vain I try, year after year , to find out from where they get the material for those whaky, hilarious skits. But it was easy to find out how much talent Bill Bishop, Lynn Routledge, Roy Jupp, Christine Hodinka, Nancy Goodwin, Velma Wace, Trudie Kennedy, Lynn Kanyo, Tom Evans,Wilma Munroe, Johnathan Goodwin have as comedians. Tom Evan's solo Let in the Clowns, the duet by Janice Magloughlen and Ward Parsons, the solo Bye Bye Lord accompanied on his guitar by Ward Parsons, were one of the vocal highlights. A hearty welcome to Tim Shelswell, the new (after Tony Gatta's move to the East Coast), percussionist, who with pianist Valerie Wauchope, delighted the audience with a woderful rendition of a Mozart sonata. Another highlight! Unsurpassed is the talent, the sheer exuberance and (I assume) a way to improvise, by members of the Mens Chorus. Performing as Cowboys, they sang, they made jokes, they acted out, they were the perfect antidote for depression, for having the Blues. When it comes to give cudos to a comedian, Steve Morse as Master of Ceremonies, deserves many. I don't know, what his profession is, but as standup comedian, he could earn quite a nice living. Jokes seem to come effortlessly, entertaining the audience between scenes. For the excellence in the Newtones Choral renditions, the laudest applause must be given to Janice Magloughlen, Music Director, who with patience, and her experience as choir leader and teacher, has welded The Newtones into a formidable, well rehearsed choral group. Mike Markowitz, once again took time out of his schedule as a professional jazz pianist, to entertain at the Newtones concert with a musical interlude, an other highlight of the evening. In conclusion some of the pearls of wisdom, given in the programme: If I save time, when do I get it back?; I was born intelligent - eduction ruined me; I'm a nobody, nobody is perfect, and therefore I'm perfect!; Your future depends on your dreams, so go to sleep. Thank you all you great people of The Newtones, of the stage crew, who made us laugh, made us happy with a few hours of pure and simple entertainment. |
