Essa moves to limit number of cats to three
by Richard Blanchard

Essa council is moving to limit the number of cats per household to a maximum of three.

Council learned Wednesday night that there have been a number of complaints about residents keeping too many cats that they can't properly care for.

"Our enforcement officer visited one residence where she counted 53 cats. It wasn't very pleasant," said mayor Dave Guergis.

Council decided to allow those residents currently owning more than three cats to continue to keep them and kittens will not be considered as cats, under the bylaw, until they are three months old.

The township is also making live traps available, free of charge, to residents to trap feral cats. The cats can then be turned over to the township's animal control officer.
