LEFROY/BELLE EWART NEWS I'm browsing along on the Internet last week and found an item that said Lefroy, Ontario was named for a man called Sir John Henry Lefroy, soldier, Governor and administrator, who hailed from Ashe, Hampshire, England. Intrigued by this information, I searched further to find out how and when he came to this area to leave such a profound mark in the community. I learned he was educated in the Military, was appointed director of the Magnetical Observatory at Toronto in 1842-53, that he travelled widely in the north on magnetic and meteorological research, founded the Canadian Institute and was awarded a doctorate by McGill University. He had his first field expedition to the Canadian north-west to measure magnetism. With an assistant and a Hudson's Bay Company brigade, he travelled more than 5,000 miles in the Northwest from May 1843 to November 1844, taking measurements at over 300 stations in an attempt to locate the Magnetic North Pole. They followed the Mackenzie River as far as Fort Good Hope and visited Fort Simpson in the west. On June 9, 1848, Lefroy was made a member of the Royal Society. Lefroy Glacier and Mount Lefroy in B.C. were also named for this adventurer. I suppose he could have visited here during one of his expeditions but I couldn't pinpoint the exact time. So, that is what I learned about Sir John Henry Lefroy and how Lefroy got its name.
