THORNTON NEWS The dancers at Positive Step Dance Academy have finished their dance competitions for this year. All of the dancers did very well at all three competitions they entered. At their final competition in Huntsville, at Deerhurst Resort, all the teams won High Gold for their performances and the Junior Modern Dance Team won the Top Honours award for their dance, 'Into the Fire" in the Novice Modern Dance Category. This same team also earned a score of 92% at the Newmarket Dance Festival and their teacher Miss Kim was presented with an award for the best choreography for their dance. Great job everyone, we're proud of you! Arise, Shine, Your Light Has Come, an evening of music at Trinity United Church on Friday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy an evening of traditional and contemporary music featuring Abby Marling, the Choir at Trinity and Friends. Call 458- 4396 for further information. Admission is free will offering. This coming Saturday is the last Saturday morning that the Huronia Rose Society will be at the Barrie Farmer's Market selling rose bushes. The roses are hardy Ontario grown bushes that will grow well in our climate. For more information call 705-728-7719. The Thornton Area Action Committee and the Thornton Library would like to thank every one for their donations to the yard sale that was held over the long weekend and to those who stopped by and made a purchase. All proceeds will go to support the Thornton Library. Again thank you very much. Also at the library they are selling high-quality canvas book bags for only $10 each. It's a great way to carry your books home and to keep read books in so that you don't forget to return them on time. The proceeds from the book bag sales will stay at the branch they are sold at. The next Ontario Early Years program for children of preschool ages will be held at the Thornton Library on Tuesday, June 5 and 12 from 10 until 11 a.m. There is no charge this event but pre-registration is required. It's almost time for the TD Summer Reading Club to begin again with registration starting on June 18. This year's theme is Lost Worlds and you can be part of discovering the treasures of ancient civilizations. It is presented by the TD Financial Group, Southern Ontario Library Services and Essa Public Libraries for the months of July and August and best of all it's free to all participants. Watch here or visit the library for more details. Cookstown's Wing Ding is one of the areas biggest and longest running community garage sale around and this year it will be held on June 2 and 3. It features countless garage sales, food booths and antique & craft vendors. The Cookstown Curling Club will be the site of a beer garden featuring local bands; a good place to rest your feet, have a cool drink and enjoy some of our local talent. The Summer Blast Day Camps held by Essa Parks and Recreation has begun registration for both camps held in Angus and Thornton. There will be a special registration SIMCOE YORK PRINTING night held at the Thornton Arena on Tuesday, June 5 from 5 until 7 p.m. Many fun activities are planned for each day of the camp including field trips to such places as the Wye March, Science Center and the Muskoka Heritage & Steam Train. On Fridays, the Thornton kids will join the Angus group for day long fun along with a BBQ lunch. A special Leadership Camp for ages 12 - 14 is available for the first two weeks of July which includes a 3 day/2 night camping trip and training to become a camp counselor. For the second week of the Leadership Camp they will assist at the Summer Blast Day Camp using the new skills they have learned. The Living Faith Community Presbyterian Church will be hosting a Raising the Roof concert to raise funds for the new church they are building in Baxter. The concert and barbeque will be held at the Baxter Public School parking lot starting at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 27. The entertainment will be provided by gospel singers Celeste Zugec and Harold Wicks and the Living Faith Praise Team. The concert is free and freewill donations will be kindly accepted in baskets placed about the event.
