THORNTON NEWS Happy Birthday to Orma Leighton, who will be celebrating her 90th birthday with an open house on June 3. It will be held from 1 until 4 p.m. at 7 Heatherwood Drive in Midhurst. Thursday, June 14 is the next Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night. It will be held at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult and children are free. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. sharp. All fiddlers, singers, callers, dancers and listeners are welcome. Call Cec Denney for more information at 458- 9996. The Ivy Minor Baseball Association along with the Toronto Blue Jays and local GM Dealers, Paul Sadlon Motors and Georgian Motors are teaming up to bring an Instructional Baseball Camp to the Ivy Ball Diamond. On Sunday, June 17 from 9:00 a.m. until 1 p.m. baseball players ages 7 and up can join together for the camp which is focused on hitting, in-field & out-field fielding, pitching and catching. Mark your calendar for the upcoming Strawberry Supper at Trinity United Church on Friday, June 22. Supper will be served from 4 until 7 p.m. and take out is available. Preschoolers are free, children 6 to 12 are $4 and adults are $12. For more information call 458-9893. The next Ontario Early Years program for children of preschool ages will be held at the Thornton Library on Tuesday, June 5 and 12 from 10 until 11 a.m. There is no charge this event but pre-registration is required. It's almost time for the TD Summer Reading Club to begin again with registration starting on June 18. This year's theme is Lost Worlds and you can be part of discovering the treasures of ancient civilizations. It is presented by the TD Financial Group, Southern Ontario Library Services and Essa Public Libraries for the months of July and August and best of all it's free to all participants. Watch here or visit the library for more details. This coming weekend is Cookstown's Wing Ding, one of the areas biggest and longest running community garage sales. It features countless garage sales, food booths and antique & craft vendors. The Cookstown Curling Club will be the site of a beer garden featuring local bands; a good place to rest your feet, have a cool drink and enjoy some of our local talent. There will be a special registration night held at the Thornton Arena on Tuesday, June 5 from 5 until 7 p.m. for the Summer Blast Day Camps held by Essa Parks and Recreation. Every week is filled with many fun activities that will keep the "I'm bored's" away all summer. There are weekly field trips to the area's best spots which include Rounds Ranch, The Serendipity Princess, and Santa's Village. Every Thursday a visit to the new Loose Moose Magic Village Water Park is planned. On Fridays, the Thornton kids will join the Angus group for day long fun along with a BBQ lunch. A special Leadership Camp for ages 12 - 14 is available for the first two weeks of July which includes a 3 day/2 night camping trip and training to become a camp counselor.
