Crash closes 400 between 88 and 89, 11 charges laid Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division Officers continue to investigate the multi-vehicle collision on Hwy 400 northbound near Highway 89 on June 18, 2007. Three cars and one unloaded tractor trailer (tanker) unit are the primary vehicles involved in the collision. The driver of the Red International Harvester truck, 48-year-old David Virgoe of Simcoe, Ontario, was killed when his truck struck the centre barrier and rolled into a slope beyond the east side shoulder area. At this time, the adult male drivers of the three involved cars have been identified and charged with a total of 11 offences. More details concerning the identities and charges will follow. Early investigation has revealed that Mr. Virgoe's emergency driving maneuvers prevented additional collisions. OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino praises the efforts of motorists who stopped to help and emergency responders who had to deal with the carnage. " This is yet another tragic example of complete disregard for safety, not from one aggressive driver, but from three. OPP Technical Collision specialists, Identification Officers and Criminal Investigators are piecing together the exact sequence of events that led to the collision. Any information should be forwarded OPP Constable Greg Clee at 905 841-5777. A strictly anonymous report can also be made through Crime Stoppers at 1 800-222 TIPS. |
