THORNTON NEWS Until you are a parent or have lost a parent, you never really know just what they do for you or how important they are in your life. I hope everyone remembered to wish their Dad a Happy Father's Day and that all the Dads out there enjoyed their special day. The strawberry supper volunteers are reminded to be at the church at 8:30 a. m. Friday morning to help hull the many strawberries needed for that evening's supper. Anyone who is able to help with the strawberries is very welcome to come and join in. Many hands make fast work. The Strawberry Supper at Trinity United Church will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22. The cost is $12 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 to 12 and preschoolers are free. Take out is available. For more information call 458-9893. With the ever changing technology of today, many of us have out-dated equipment gathering dust in our homes. If anyone has a surplus DVD player that they would like to donate to the library, please call Terry at 458-2549. Registration began Monday for the TD Summer Reading Club "Lost Worlds" at the library. The free club runs in July & August and includes club meetings, reading encouragement, games, prizes and more. Also returning this summer is the "Reach for the Stars" reading program. This reading program is designed for children who are reluctant readers and with the help of reading coaches, Stacey & Dawn, they will receive one-onone reading encouragement. This program fills up fast so book your appointments soon. During the hot summer days, both the libraries in Thornton and Angus are designated Township of Essa Cooling Places. During their regular operating hours you are welcome to come and cool off and enjoy the air conditioned comfort and escape the heat and humidity. Look through the great selection of magazines and books, browse the internet or just sit awhile to cool off and escape the heat. As always, if you have any news, meetings, anniversaries or special occasions, I'd be happy to write about them. You can email me at thorntonnews @rogers.com or call me at (705) 458- 0869 or drop it off at 25 Robert Street. Bye for now….. |
