Gibson centre opens it's doors; 'The wow starts now'
by Wendy Soloduik

The official grand opening ceremonies of The Gibson Centre for Community, Arts & Culture took place this past Canada Day long weekend.

Celebrations for the completion of the Centre began on Thursday, where many special guests, including Helena Guergis, MP-Simcoe/Grey, and Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs & Trade and Sport, New Tecumseth deputy mayor Rick Milne, Jim Wilson MP - Simcoe/Grey, Tom Walsh mayor of Adjala/Tosorontio, Rick Milne, New Tecumseth councillors Christine Brayford, Jamie Smith and Dennis Eagan were on-hand to cut the ribbon, following a series of speeches.

Marketing director Andrea Roylance, who played a pivotal role in getting the Centre off the ground, introduced each of the prestigious guests as they made their way to the podium to offer congratulations.

"Today's ribbon cutting is symbolic of the creation of the centre we all wanted," said Guergis. "The generosity of all of the volunteers is inspiring. Although financial contributions are wonderful, it is the people on the ground floor that make this possible."

The Gibson Centre will help to improve the strength of art and culture in our community. "The new facility will strengthen the community's social networks, promote participation in recreational activities and increase local tourism. It will also contribute to infrastructure development in the region."

Inside the Gibson Centre you will find: an art gallery, studio space, café, seniors' centre and banquet hall. It will host recreational programs, community meetings, educational workshops and celebratory events.

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario each committed up to $532,001 to the project.

"Canada's New Government wants to strengthen the cultural experiences of Canadians because we recognize that culture contributes to stronger, healthier communities," said Ms. Guergis. "The Government of Canada proudly contributed $532,000 towards this modern, multi-purpose facility which will be used by the entire community."

"The Centre is an extraordinary facility that is enhancing community and culture in New Tecumseth. It is certainly an attraction that is unparalleled anywhere in Simcoe County," said Jim Wilson, MPP, Simcoe-Grey. "You've done great wonders with the fort I used to play in!"

"A community centre is a safe, nurturing environment where learning, arts and culture come alive," said deputy mayor Milne. "The Gibson Centre is a valuable asset to this community, and is something that everyone can benefit from."
