THORNTON NEWS This evening starting at 7 p.m., the Huronia Rose Society will be holding their Rose Show at the South Shore Community Centre on Lakeshore Drive in Barrie. The Rose Show will feature a presentation about roses where you will have the opportunity to ask your rose questions, there will be displays and booths of rose related products and of course the show, where a wide variety of roses and floral arrangements will be on display. Admission is just $1 per person. For more information call Edna at 721-0484. Today was the first meeting of the TD Summer Reading Club at the Thornton Library. The free club runs until the end of August with a club meeting at the library every Wednesday afternoon. The meetings are full of fun activities for the club members. The 'Reach for the Stars' reading program has also returned this summer. It is a reading program for children who struggle with reading and keeps them actively reading over the summer. With the help on reading coaches Stacey and Dawn the children receive one on one tutoring and encouragement. Spots have filled up fast for both programs, call the library at 458-2549 for more information. During the hot summer days, both the libraries in Thornton and Angus are designated Township of Essa Cooling Places. During their regular operating hours you are welcome to come and cool off and enjoy the air conditioned comfort and escape the heat and humidity. Look through the great selection of magazines and books, browse the internet or just sit awhile to cool off and escape the heat. Hope everyone had a great Canada Day long weekend and that you took a moment to remember the great things about this country we live in. I was surprised by family and friends with a birthday party, thank you to everyone that came, it was wonderful. Watch out for the children, who are excited by two months of freedom from school. They may not have their minds on safety rules when riding their bikes or crossing the streets. Enjoy the summer, it flies by much to quickly. As always, if you have any news, meetings, anniversaries or special occasions, I'd be happy to write about them. You can email me at thorntonnews @rogers.com or call me at (705) 458-0869 or drop it off at 25 Robert Street. Bye for now….. |
