SSP busy over holiday weekend The officers attend personal injury motor vehicle collision on Friday afternoon at the 25 th Side Road and 13 Line of Innisfil in which a Markham man 51 years of age had failed to yield to through traffic in his Mazda van and was struck by a southbound truck and trailer driven by a local resident. The passenger in the van was transported to Royal Victoria Hospital with a possible broken arm along with a younger female who was examined for a minor back injury. The Markham man was subsequently charged under the Highway Traffic Act. He had just arrived in the area to commence his vacation with his family when this accident occurred. There were also two other serious motor vehicle collisions over the weekend, one being at the 10 Side Road and Lockhart Road and another 1 July 2007 at the 20th Side Road and Lockhart Road in Innisfil. Persons invovled were transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries. Police were also involved in cottage patrol on our North / South Roadways in the South Simcoe Police jurisdiction, focusing on speeding and aggressive drivers. As a result there were over 100 Highway Traffic Act Charges laid in three days. Marine Unit was kept very busy to due cooler tempertures and high winds. There were four Marine Search and Rescue calls over the weekend including a 14 year old boy who was located in a Kayak. He was not a strong paddler and attempted to cross the Lake in Cooks Bay area in large waves. He was subsequently located by our police vessel and returned to his parent and grandfather at their cottage in a safe condition. He was wearing his life jacket at the time of the incident. There was also a sailing vessels that was taking on water and became grounded with four persons on board . The police vessel took these persons to safety and assisted in safely securing the vessel from further damage. Another incident took place near Thorah Island were a vessel capsized and our vessel responded to assist Durham and York Regional Police Marine Units. The occupants of this vessel were located and taken to safety by police. Police remind all boaters that when high winds occur on Lake Simcoe venturing out can be treacherous for even the most experienced boaters. Please be cautious and use your common sense before leaving your cottage or marina in these conditions. Fortunately, no serious injuries or fatalities occurred over this weekend.
