About Honest Ed

Where to go to find the best buys for bedding, household utensils, clothing, toys for them? Go to Honest Ed's.

It was the first time for us to shop there, but for them it became the place to find affordable goods.

And it was not only to shop there, but also the place to connect with other immigrants, to hear their language spoken. To make new friendships, to exchange information about housing, jobs, schools.

It was also soon after, that in Honest Ed's neighbourhood, butchers, delicatessen, coffee shops catered to the new clientele with European cold cuts, cheeses, pastries. To have a cup of coffee, to feel a little bit back in the old country.

Since those years, Honest Ed's customers have come from different backgrounds, but the store's special attention to their need, the warmth, clutter in her aisles, and bargain prices remained the same.

Thank you Ed Mirvish! May you rest in peace.

Remember when

The 5th annual Let's Get Together party was held on Saturday, July 14.

Receiving their guests at their summer home on 3 Mile Lake, were Gunars and Frances Balodis, their son Mark and daughter Olivia with her husband Dave.

About 50 friends, former neighbours, among them from Cookstown Elma Ross, Lloyd and Bonnie West, Grace Cooper, Ralph Corrigan with friend, Iva Robinson, Linda Weaver, did what the event is planned for: To share stories, swap anecdotes about times or events, remembering Frances living in Cookstown with her parents Wes and Olive Hindle, meeting Gunars, their wedding at Cookstown United Church. The place on 3 Mile Lake, used to be first the Hindle's summer home and then their permanent residence. With the family expanding, Gunars and Frances have built a larger house, but the warmth and "feel at home" remained the same.

The only drawback this year was the rain which kept the guests mostly indoors. Still all enjoyed the bountiful picnic , taking pictures. A huge decorated cake, with words of a poem Frances wrote, made it special.

On behalf of all: Let's get together again next year and let's continua to Remember when.

Happy Birthday

Isobel Couts, celebrated her 100th Birthday at her home in Barrie, surrounded by her family.

From all of us, best wishes and God's Blessing!

Cookstown United Church

Members of the congregation have received a letter from Rev. Heather Power, informing them that she will leave the charge of Thornton/Cookstown in mid October, with her last Sunday on October 14.

We will miss her, her sunny disposition, but we also understand that her calling is to work with young people and feel, that this ministry is very important for the future of the church and to instill the values of faith.

The feasibility of installing chair lifts in the Cookstown church is studied by a committee and might be discussed at a Congregational meeting, planned for September 9.
