THORNTON NEWS
by Cathie Miller

There are many special events coming up in our area over the next couple of weeks. Everyone knows about Barrie's Kempenfest along the waterfront this coming long weekend and for those who enjoy taking a step back in time the Georgian Bay Steam Association will be holding their annual Steam Show in Cookstown starting August 3rd until the 6th.

The following weekend in Alliston is their weekend long Potato Festival and of course the best event of all, the Community Corn Roast and BBQ right here in Thornton.

The Thornton Area Action Committee sponsors this annual get together for friends and neighbours to meet and get to know one another.

Along with the delicious corn provided by Chappel Farms there will be hotdogs and hamburgers to purchase and a table of treats and drinks for sale run by our local TOPS chapter. The firefighters will be there as always and this year will be selling memorabilia commemorating their 50th anniversary of serving our village.

The Corn Roast will be held on August 12 from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Firehall/Library. Watch for the flyer coming in your mail soon.

At the library, "Lost Worlds" is heading into its final month. It's been a great summer so far and their

Wall of Fame is filling up quickly with all the reading ballots from the accomplishments of the TD Summer Book Club readers. Everyone registered in the Club is reminded to return all their reading ballots and various contest entries by the due dates.

Following the Club's finale, the library staff will compile all the reading statistics and report the results to everyone.

Need something to do with the whole family and it's free?

Why not participate in the Good For Life & Essa Public Library's Family Fun Night and enjoy an evening of activities with your family? On Wednesday, August 22 from 6:30 until 7:30 join other Thornton families and join in the fun activities, for good family fun.

There will be prize bags awarded to every participating family & one grand prize of a supermarket gift certificate (intended for use to purchase "healthy" food choices). Registration is not required.

So, bring the family to the library for some active fun & exercise.

Also coming soon at the library is the latest list of pre-publication book selections.

You can sign up to read any of the new arrivals that will interest you and when your name comes up on the list, they give you a call to come pick it up. What could be more handy?

Ask at the circulation desk to see the book or find it on their website at www.essa. library.on.ca
