South Simcoe Police rescue two on Lake The South Simcoe Police were contacted by the Coast Guard at approx. 11:54 p.m. Saturday evening advising that two people had capsized their canoe and were yelling for help. They were at the East end of Kempenfelt Bay. The South Simcoe marine unit were out earlier on another call when the distress call came in. They attended to the area within 5 minutes and they arrived in the area just as two other sail boats had removed the two parties from the water. The two victims alleged being on the lake in the canoe enjoying the evening and the night sky. When the victim's realized that water was getting rough they turned for shore and were capsized by a wave. The victims became separated from the canoe after unsuccessfully attempting to right it. All personal belongings of the victims' were lost in the incident, which included safety equipment and life jackets. Ultimately, life jackets were not worn in this situation (though they advised they were on board) by the victims, which would also aid rescuers in locating them as they are typically brightly colored. A 54 year old male and a 50 year old female both of Shanty Bay were treated for hypothermia by ambulance on scene and released. The South Simcoe Police Marine Unit are advising boaters to wear their life jackets when ever your on the lake. |
