I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. We had great weather so no complaints. The intent of the Civic Holiday is to "not work". In Canada, Civic Holiday is, in most cases, the first Monday of August unless another civil or provincial holiday exists on a different date, in which case the local holiday is used; in Canada this is not a statutory holiday. A bill has been attempted to be passed in the House of Commons but it has always been unsuccessful. If an employer wants you to work, it is a work day. What you will often find, however, is that its name, Civic Holiday, changes from province to province, and even amongst different regions within provinces in Canada. This tells us that Civic Holiday is not as important as some other holidays, but still it is celebrated as a statutory Canadian holiday.

They're calling it "By the Book Movies, meaning that you may have read the book of the same title, now see the movie...enjoy!!!

Surf's Up (G) A behindthe scenes look at the annual Penguin World Surfing Championship, and its newest participant, upand comer Cody Maverick: Saturday, September 22, 1:00 p.m.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (PG) The Fantastic Four learn that they aren't the only superpowered beings in the universe when they square off against the powerful Silver Surfer and the planeteating Galactus: Saturday, September 8, 1:00 p.m.

Junior and Senior Youth Groups: The Parish of St. Peter's and St. John's (St. PJ's) youth group and the Senior youth group, will be back in September with regular meetings. We wish all the youth a very happy and safe summer vacation. See you in September! Call Pam at 705-735-3484 for information.

The Gilford and District Horticultural Society: Meet every second Monday in the Churchill Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. from March to November. The next general meeting of the Gilford & District Horticultural Society will be held at the Churchill Community Hall on Yonge Street at 7.30 p.m - August 13th .This will be a very interesting meeting for many of us who grow, or would love to grow exquisite Roses !! Edna Caldwell of the Ontario Horticultural Society will speak on growing beautiful roses by changing various spraying techniques and other valuable tips for growing different types of roses in our area. There will be a flower show including Pot Night for Coleus, or any other plant, annuals, herbs or Floral Designs, using foliage and or flowers, fruits & veggies. The Fall Flower & Vegetable Show this year will be held at The Grange Hall in Lefroy on Sept.8 2007. Euchre: Join Reg at St. Peter's Parish Hall for his weekly euchre game every Wednesday afternoon. Start time is 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Come on out and join in the fun and fellowship. Call Reg at 705- 456-6801 for all info. All proceeds go to the St. Peter's building fund.

2nd Annual Boat Cruise: St. Peter's Anglican Church is having its 2nd annual boat cruise on Tuesday, August 14th from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. The boat will leave the Port of Orillia on the dot of 6:30 and return at 8:30 p.m. There will be a light luncheon served on board. A cash bar is available. Tickets are $25/person. Please call Dean at 705-456-2202 prior to August 14th. A special invitation is extended to all those at our sister church, St. John's Anglican in Cookstown. Last year was a wonderful trip...let's make this one even better. Bon voyage! All proceeds go to St. Peter's general fund.

Smile: A man gets into a taxi after a long night at the bars and halfway home decides he needs some fast food. He taps the driver on the shoulder and suddenly the driver screams!! He swerves across the road and jumps the sidewalk, stopping just short of a cement barrier. Then the driver turns around and says, "Don't EVER, EVER tap me on the shoulder while I'm driving!!" The passenger says, "Gee, I'm sorry; I didn't know it would scare you so much." The driver replies, "Before this I drove a hearse for 25 years!!"
