Should you install a home security system?
Do you have valuables such as an art collection, antiques, jewelry and the like that would be attractive to thieves? Are you concerned about your personal safety? Do you have young children at home? Do you travel a lot and leave loved ones home alone? Do you vacation frequently? Do you live in a high crime area? Is your home a target for thieves? Is your home left unoccupied while you are on vacation or away at the cottage/boat during the weekends? While you are considering the installation of a home security system, there are some things you can do to make your home less of a target: • Trim bushes and trees back from the windows and doors. • Replace outdoor bulbs and non-functioning lights. Install lighting in dimly lighted areas. • Repair cracked windows. Install pins in windows to prevent entry. • Installed keyed locks in slider doors and place a rod in the track to help prevent the door from being forced open. • Install dead bolt locks on all of the doors. • Replace hollow-core doors with metal or solid hardwood. • Install a wide-angle peephole, rather than relying on a chain when answering the door. • Use timers while away to activate lights, radio, and television to fool thieves into thinking someone is home. Have mail and newspapers held or picked up by a responsible person, so your home looks lived-in.
