THORNTON NEWS
by Cathie Miller

It was wonderful to get that little bit of rain on Sunday afternoon and it was wonderful when it stopped in time and didn't rain on the folks who came to the Community Corn Roast and BBQ. All of the volunteers started the preparations for the Corn Roast in the pouring rain but it didn't dampen their spirits. They covered picnic tables with cheerful green covers, they set up the tent, got the BBQ's ready and husked hundreds of cobs of corn. Members of TOPS put together a delicious array of treats and cold drinks; the Thornton Firefighters Association set up a table of memorabilia for their 50th anniversary and gave tours of the fire trucks and camp counselors from Essa's Summer Blast Day Camps had games and activities for the kids. When 3 p.m. arrived all was ready and the guests started to appear; not long after there were line ups for food, corn and drinks. The delicious sweet corn was donated by Chappel Farms and "you couldn't eat just one." Fresh picked that morning and dipped in butter, is there anything better on a summer's afternoon? It was wonderful to see many former Thornton residents come out to visit their ex-neighbours and to see new neighbours bringing their families for the first time. Of course it was also great to catch up with all the regulars, who faithfully come out every year. This was the 10th anniversary of the Corn Roast and BBQ and it was the most successful yet. The goal of the Thornton Area Action Committee in hosting this event is to bring the community and neighbours together and they certainly achieved that goal on Sunday afternoon.
