Spotters needed while tubing; it's the law
by Michelle Minnoch

With the rash of tubing incidents over the past few days, South Simcoe Police Sgt. Steve Wilson said people need to be aware of safety while tubing.

"It is imperative that there is someone else on the boat, besides the driver, who is watching out."

Not only is it a matter of safety, but Sgt. Wilson said it is the law. "Anything can happen out there."

He said a spotter is needed to not only keep watch of the area surrounding the tube and look out for possible hazards, but to keep an eye on the person in the tube.

"If someone falls out of the tube and the driver is unaware, then the tuber in the water is in danger," he said. "You have to minimize the risks while you are on the water; that's why you need the spotter."

He also stressed the importance of wearing a floatation device while tubing. That need is especially true if the rider finds themselves out of the tube and into the lake.
