OPP event Friday targets safety before heading back to school

For the last long weekend of the summer, the OPP are planning a special event Friday August 31 '07 from 6am - 9am at the Petro- Canada Service Centre on Hwy 400 northbound, 3km north of Major MacKenzie Dr.

The theme for Labour Day Weekend is "Back to School & Work" . Together with MTO and community safety partners, the OPP will have lots to see, do and talk about to get students and motorists ready for the new school year, and increased traffic volumes as holidays end.

There will be information and demonstrations available for families regarding the following;

- there will be a school bus with kids on board to demonstrate School Bus safety with Ontario Safety League(OSL) and Canadian Automobile Association (CAA)

- a demonstration regarding the risks of "distracted driving" with the fantastic D.U.M.B. Car driving simulator provided by the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC)

- a tractor-trailer will be on hand to demonstrate how to safely share the road with trucks with Road Knight professional driver provided by the Ontario Trucking Association (OTA).

- they will discuss preventative maintenance, and what to do in case of breakdown or collision with the CAA.

- MTO and OPP officers will be conducting inspections/ enforcement on unsafe vehicles & trailers.
