THORNTON NEWS
by Cathy Miller

Wow, it's September already, where did the summer go? At my house there's another "wow where did the time go" as our daughter, Emily, turns 13 today. It's hard to believe she was just one when we moved to Thornton. Happy Birthday Emily!

The Cookstown Agricultural Society's Fall Fair will be held this coming Saturday, September 8. It will be held in a new location just adjacent to the former fairgrounds at the end of John Street East starting at 11 a.m. It will feature the 4H achievement show, a medieval reenactment, a pedal tractor pull and an ice cream eating contest. Admission to the scaled down fair is free and it is recommended that you bring a lawn chair to take in the events.

Since it is fall again its time for the Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddler's Nights to begin again. The first one will be held September 13th at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult and children are free. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. sharp. All fiddlers, singers, callers, dancers and listeners are welcome. Call Cec Denney for more information at 458-9996.

Trinity United Church will be holding their annual Roast Beef Dinner on Saturday, September 22, with continuous sittings from 4:30 until 7:00 p.m. Preschoolers are free, children 6 to 12 are $6 and adults are $12. Ontario Early Years and Essa Public Library have the fall schedule ready for the latest Make n Take session for preschoolers. In September, two dates have been scheduled starting on September 18 and again on September 25 both starting at 10 a.m. Stop by the library and sign your preschoolers up to enjoy songs, stories, crafts and more. This is a free event but pre-registration is required. For more information call 458-2549.

Essa Public Library has decided that this will be the last year of the contract between them and the New Tecumseth Public Library for free use of their library services for Essa residents. This will mean a savings of almost $10,000 of library funds, that the library board feels would be more beneficial to all library users if redirected towards the improvement of the libraries in Essa. Library circulation in Essa Township has doubled in recent years. The Essa Library Board is looking towards the future with further plans for new books and materials, automation plans, increased operating hours and the new branch in Angus scheduled to open in 2009.

The Thornton Skating Club will be holding two registration dates for Canskate Junior and Senior and Powerskate at the Thornton Arena. The first will be on Monday, September 17 from 7 until 9 p.m. and the second will be held on Saturday, September 29 from 9 a.m. until noon. Also new this year is a fun Cardio Adult skate on Wednesday evenings. Call Charlene at 739-9226 for more information.
