It's time to meet your provincial candidates
Family Coalition Victor Carvalho hopes to earn the faith of York- Simcoe residents. Born into a family of seven children in India in 1945, Carvalho attended Catholic schools in Bombay and Nagpur. The Family Coalition Party candidate for York-Simcoe immigrated to Canada in 1967, and has since taught at Catholic schools in Durham Region and Quebec. He's worked as a contractor, and purchased a campground in Minesing several years ago. Carvalho converted the camp into Catholicland, a family recreation and reflection centre. He currently operates a marina in Newmarket, and has coordinated Barrie's annual Life Chain and several other events for the Campaign Life Coalition and Euthanasia Prevention. The Family Coalition would defend human rights and traditional family values, if elected, says Carvalho. John Gilbank Liberal Party York-Simcoe's provincial Liberal candidate says you can take his promises to the bank.
Over the last few years, Gilbank has worked with groups dedicated to the clean-up of Lake Simcoe and the Georgina Health Care Council. He graduated from the University of Waterloo, and was named Turnaround Entrepreneur of the Year in 1997. Gilbank has also worked as a consul for the Canadian trade commissioner. He says steps must be taken to protect the lake. He'd also like to build a greater community consensus, to learn how local residents want provincial issues dealt with. Caley McKibbin Libertarian Party Caley McKibbin stands for liberty, property protection rights and equality before the law. It's why the 24-year-old student became the Libertarian Party candidate in York-Simcoe for the upcoming provincial election. Currently studying to become a financial advisor, McKibbin says his values reflect those of the Libertarians. If elected, the party would help create moral soundness, legal certainty and wealth for every resident.
Nancy Morrison Nancy Morrison has been raising awareness of autism across Ontario during the last five years. Now, the New Democratic Party candidate for York-Simcoe hopes to take her concerns directly to Queen's Park. In 2002, Morrison developed an autism information and advocacy newsletter. She's currently a chair of the Autism Speaks fundraising walk, and has studied at George Brown and the Ontario and Royal Canadian Mounted police colleges. Morrison's autism advocacy work earned her the Kinark Child and Family Services president's award in 2005.
Morrison moved to Bradford in 1996, and has worked for the South Simcoe Police Service for the last eight years. Julia Munro After 12 years in the Ontario Legislature, Julia Munro still has new ground to cover. Munro, the Progressive Conservative candidate for York-Simcoe, was first elected MPP of York North in 1995. With the establishment of the new York-Simcoe riding for the upcoming election, Munro hopes to receive popular support from South Simcoe residents. She says the PCs would commit several million dollars in funding, if elected, to improve education and Lake Simcoe water quality, reduce highway gridlock, and help farmers. She's served several roles in government, including parliamentary assistant to the premier, the management board and ministries of transportation and culture. She's also served on a public accounts committee, which reviews government appointments and agencies such as the LCBO and Hydro One. Munro has lived in Georgina since 1972.
Jim Reeves hopes to engineer a political victory next week. Reeves, a retired engineer and business owner, is the Green Party candidate for York-Simcoe in the upcoming provincial election. He's served several committees and associations, and has volunteered on the Georgina Association for Community Living, York Environmental Stewardship and the Georgina Heritage Committee. He lives in Georgina, and enjoys sailing, classical music and recreational walking. Reeves says the Green Party will reduce greenhouse gases, increase clean and sustainable energy supplies, and work towards electoral reform and a single, publicly funded education system if elected.
The party would also increase funding for health care promotion and disease and accident prevention programs, he said.
