Plenty to do around Thornton
THORNTON NEWS
by Cathie Miller

Happy birthday Sadie! Join family and friends at Trinity United Church from 2 until 4 p.m. for a "come and go" tea to celebrate Sadie Sanders' 90th birthday Saturday, October 6. Best wishes only.

Almost 200 dinners were served at the recent roast beef dinner held at Trinity United Church. The dinner is always a delicious experience made more memorable this year by a hydro outage. Thank you to all the supporters of the event and especially to those who arrived during the power outage. Many hours of volunteer work is needed for a successful dinner and another thank you goes out to all who helped in every way from cooking and baking to serving and cleaning up. Watch for the upcoming Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Nov. 17.

There's still time to stop by Thornton's Tim Hortons and buy a Smile Cookie or two for just $1 each. The proceeds from the sale of these cookies will be donated to the Thornton Branch of the Essa Public Library. The cookies are only available until Oct. 7.

If you saw a group of people taking a walk today at 12:30 p.m., they were part of an attempt to make history and enter the pages of the Guinness Book of World Records. The one kilometre walk is to break the record for the largest number of people walking one km at the same time. Thanks to Essa Public Library staff for coordinating this history making event in our village.

October is Canadian Library Month and Ontario Public Library Week is being celebrated from October 15 to 20. At our library many events and activities are planned which includes "Every child has a card"- a program to visit local schools to promote library registration; family game night on Wednesday, October 24 from 7 to 8 p.m., playing traditional board games such as Scrabble or Checkers; Bedtime tales for children read by our library board members or their spouses; a prize draw for a chance to win one of their canvas book bags and many other events and displays. Visit the library often so you don't miss any of the planned events.

Thursday, October 11 is the next Barrie Thornton Old Time Fiddlers Night. It will be held at the Lions Hall and the admission price is $3 per adult and children are free. The doors open at 6 p.m. and the music starts at 7 p.m. All fiddlers, singers, callers, dancers and listeners are welcome. Call Cec Denney for more information at 458-9996.
