Township turns its blue suede shoes away from Elvis festival
By Richard Blanchard

Essa council has turned down a bid to support a proposed Elvis Presley impersonator festival in Angus.

Council reconfirmed Wednesday night an earlier decision to not waive or reduce rental fees amounting to $1,600 for the use of the recreation complex in Angus. Council had previously turned down a request for reduction in fees in September.

Councillors were not swayed by the function's organizers that the profits from the festival would be given to the local Christmas Cheer charity.

"Sometimes, there isn't a lot of a lot of money for charities from these sort of events after all costs are paid," said mayor Dave Guergis. "I don't want to see them spend $10,000 in expenses and only see a profit of $50."

The township's parks and recreation committee will also be reviewing this request.
