Man turns himself in after fleeing police

South Simcoe Police arrested an 18-year-old Barrie man following a pursuit in the Innisfil Saturday morning.

At about 1:30 a.m., police stopped a man allegedly operating a vehicle at a high rate of speed in Stroud. During the investigation, an officer demanded the driver provide a breath sample into a roadside screening device. The driver complied with the request and allegedly failed the test.

The officer placed the driver under arrest for driving with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in his blood. At that time, the driver began to resist. The driver put his vehicle into motion and sped off, striking the officer with the car door.

Police chased the suspect for a short time, but the pursuit was stopped for public safety concerns.

The man is known to police, and surrendered Oct. 21. He was charged with escaping lawful custody, dangerous driving, flight from police, impaired operation, over 80 mgs, assault with a weapon and assault with intent to resist arrest.

The officer suffered minor injuries but did not require medical attention.
