Paramedics given national honours

Four County of Simcoe paramedics have received the Governor General's Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service medal, recognizing their outstanding contributions to the community.

Created in 1994, the medal recognizes "professionals in pre-hospital emergency medical services who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency."

Recipients must complete at least 20 years of service, including at least 10 years in the performance of duties involving potential risk. Paramedics Terry Lethbridge (retired), Robert Duquette, Gerard Desrochers and Martin McNamara received the medals.

"It is truly an honour to not only be nominated, but to be selected for this prestigious award," said Duquette. "Paramedics are dedicated to all communities throughout Simcoe County and it's a privilege to serve our residents."

County paramedic and previous recipient William Langford was recognized with a 10-year pin for additional service.

Over 250 paramedics are employed by the municipality.

"Each day, county residents rely on the care and professionalism provided by the paramedics," said Jane Sinclair, the county's health and cultural services manager.

Paramedics responds to approximately 40,000 medical and trauma calls in the county each year.
