Church hosts early Remembrance Day vigil
By Susan Stein

Yes, we rememberd them, all those who died and fought for us so that we can live in freedom from tyranny and opression.

All of us, the Legionaires, the cadets, the veterans, the guides, the congregation assembled at Cookstown United Church at the Remembrance Day Service on Sunday November 4.

We remembered Them as the bugle sounded the Last Post, the Reveille and as we said "They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remeber them."

We remembered their sacrifices as we sang "For the Healing of the Nations" and as we listened to Rev. Thelma Arnott's meditation "God of the Living". As we remember, let us build a world of peace.

Assembled at the Cookstown Cenotaph, the veterans, the cadets, members of the Alliston Legion, residents, visitors and family members paid tribute to them singing O Canada, listening to the Last Post, Lament and Reveille, the Act of Remembrance and to the honour roll for First and Second World War soldiers, as read by Allan Dawson. His two brothers died, fighting for us during the Second World War.

Paying tribute to them and laying wreaths were Peter Van Loan, representing the Canadian government, Julia Munro MPP for York-Simcoe, Brian Jackson representing the Town of Innisfil, Bill Brock first vice president of Legion branch 171, Allan Dawson in memory for the Dawson brothers, Doug Scott in memory of Jobie Riley, Jennifer and Joanna representing the guides. A prayer by Rev. Robert Mitchell concluded the ceremony.
