This coming Friday evening, Nov. 9 is Light Up Night in Cookstown from 6 to 10 p.m. There will be a town crier and Christmas tree lighting at 6:30 p.m. At 8:30 p.m. there will be a parade. In between will be shopping, carolers roving the streets, treats and children can visit with Santa before he gets too busy. There will be something for everyone.

The Thornton Lions will be hosting their annual spaghetti dinner on Sunday November 18 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Lions Club Foundation of Canada's dog guide program. This program trains dog guides for visually impaired people. It's a great cause and a delicious way to support it.

Free flu shot clinics are being held around the region in the coming weeks. There will be one held right here in Thornton at the arena on Wednesday November 14 from 3 to 8 p.m. If you can't make it on that date there are many being held around the region. Sandra Cochrane sent me along this bit of news from Ivy Presbyterian Church.

We had many things to be thankful during October including the baptism of Rylan Varcoe, son of Chris and Melanie Varcoe. On Oct. 14, many friends, family, church adherents and council joined us for our 142nd anniversary and the dedication of our new addition. Contractor William Laycock from Essa Homes was recognized for his outstanding work. This was followed by fellowship and a lovely dinner served by the women of the church. The Secret Sisters met on Oct. 16 for their revealing party. They arrived dressed as mimes joining together for a potluck dinner and evening of fun, games and laughter. Thank you to Wendy Zimmerman for being a great hostess. The third year of the Secret Sisters program is already in place. The women of the church prepared and served lunch following the funerals of Margaret Kuzyk and Evelyn Cochrane, who will both be sadly missed. The women continue to meet weekly for their bible study, "Stress & Worry."

Upcoming in November is an event that you won't want to miss. It's the Ivy Café - One Night Only - which is an evening of local talent, coffee, dessert and fellowship being held at the Ivy Orange Hall on Nov. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $5 and a nonperishable food donation. The food will go to Barrie's Youth Haven and the cash proceeds to our mission fund. For more information, call 424-4675.

The latest production at the South Simcoe Theatre begins a three week run starting Nov. 15. They will be presenting the Canadian Musical adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women.

It follows the lives of four sisters in New England during the civil war. For tickets, call the box office at 458-4432 or visit their website at www.SouthSimcoeTheater.c om.

The library is hosting a Veteran's Day display until Nov. 12. They will feature books, DVD's and handouts to remember those who sacrificed for us during both world wars, the Korean War and those that are currently serving around the world. In other library news, the popular Community Access Program (CAP) is returning. Call Lesley at 424-6531 to make your appointment for free one-on-one lessons on how to use the computer or the internet. The Essa Public Library has also started an Online Book Club forum to talk about books, visit eplonlinebookclub.freeforu ms.org to find out more. The library has a new service called PULSE. Patrons may borrow and download digital titles anytime from their own personal computers or at their local branch. For more information about everything that's happening at our library, call 458-2549.

I hate to say it, but winter is fast approaching and with it comes winter parking regulations.

Between the hours of 2 and 8 a.m., there is no street parking any where in Essa Township, to allow the safe clearing of our streets. Even if it hasn't snowed and the roads are clear, the bylaw is still in effect and you can be ticketed.

Don't forget to wear your poppy and remember those who have fought to keep our freedoms. If you have any news, announcements, or coming events, you can email me at thorntonnews@rogers.com, call me at 458-0869 or drop it off at 25 Robert Street. Bye for now.
