Medieval festival may return to Cookstown

Cookstown residents could be getting medieval again.

A town committee passed a recommendation to allow the Society for Creative Anachronism to host a medieval event at the Cookstown Curling Club and Fairground May 17.

While the event still needs to be approved by council, it would include target archery and supervised medieval combat demonstrations.

"Each year, our chapter hosts a medieval event at the Cookstown (site)," said Sandra Benetti, president of the anachronism society's Simcoe County chapter. "In years past, our hall rental has included the use of the surrounding grounds and parking facilities."

Benetti says the event will not damage town property or create excessive noise.

The society has held several medieval art and cultural events throughout the county over the last 15 years. Several events have also been held in the town during that time.

It is a non-profit group dedicated to researching and displaying information from the Middle Ages, which range from 600 to 1,600 AD.
