Drivers could soon be slowing down along several Innisfil streets.
Town council will debate reducing the speed limit along seven different stretches of road during an upcoming meeting. Leslie Drive between the 25th Sideroad and Willard Drive, Leslie adjacent to Holy Cross Catholic School, a stretch of Willard which runs 150 metres south of Leslie, and Jans Boulevard adjacent to Nantyr Shores Secondary School may all be lowered to 40 kilometres per hour, according to a town report.
Jans from Webster Boulevard to Leslie will also be discussed.
Under the plan, the 25th Sideroad between Innisfil Beach and Adams roads would be designated as a community safety zone.
The reductions would be done for the safety of students attending local schools, said councillor Rod Boynton.
"I have no problem with this, and I understand all the changes that have been made. The original request for the reduction on Jans was to address the speeds at Crossroads Park. Do parks and playgrounds not meet the needs for speed control?" He said.
Recently, council received a request for speed reductions along the Alcona roads.
"Originally, the reason this came forward was because there were so many complaints of speeding up and down WIllard and Leslie. It was almost being used as a racetrack," said Boynton. "Our police can't be everywhere at once, but at least the reduction in speed (might help). If it has school zones and (we) reduce the speed limit to 40 kilometres and hour, and a few fines were laid, it sends the message to slow down and we've accomplished what we wanted to do."
Deputy mayor Gord Wauchope says all of Leslie needs to be reduced to 40 km/h.
"All I'm asking is that the whole street at this time go to 40 kilometres," he said. "Holy Cross is right in the middle between the 25th Sideroad and Willard, it takes up half a block. It should be made a 40 kilometre speed all the way."
